Insights on How to Improve Logistics Performance from an Interactive Simulation Game

The paper describes a comprehensive evaluation of experiences with a production simulation game, the Logistics Game, conducted over more than 10 years with students and practitioners at the ETH Zurich. The objective of the game is to give insights on how to improve logistics performance. After an introduction to the theoretical background, the game is described and results of 72 groups are discussed. In particular, the effects and the combinations of measures are investigated. The results show that improvement strategies that are in accordance with lean production, in particular with justin-time, enables best logistics performance. The game is suitable to get familiar with interrelations of logistics targets and measures in an intuitive way.
